2. Ahmed Ibn Tulun Mosque.. The Foundation and Genius of Site Selection

According to historical and archaeological studies, when Egypt's previous capital, "Al-Fustat," became overcrowded with residents, Ahmed Ibn Tulun (the Abbasid governor of Egypt who gained independence in 266 AH / 872 AD) founded the city of "Al-Qata'i" in the year 256 AH. This was followed by the establishment of his mosque to serve as a congregational mosque for Muslims for Friday prayers.

Looking at the mosque from the perspective of historical geography, we find significant indicators in the choice of site and construction periods:

The Summit of Yashkur Hill (Topography as a Shield): The mosque was built on the summit of Yashkur Hill. This elevation represented a geographical advantage to protect this massive structure from natural hazards and floods, as well as granting it strategic and visual oversight as a political center of gravity.
Chronological Documentation of Construction: Authenticated historical references indicate that the construction of the mosque began in 263 AH / 876 AD and its architecture was completed in 265 AH / 879 AD. Meanwhile, other sources mention that its full completion extended until the year 276 AH, spanning a massive area of about 6.5 acres (approximately 28,800 square meters). This makes it one of the largest mosques in the Islamic world and one of the oldest preserved mosques built in Islamic Egypt.

3. Architecture as a Mirror of Cultural Geography (The Spirit of Samarra in Cairo)

Studies in human geography confirm that the upbringing of rulers transfers architectural and cultural styles across political borders. Because Ahmed Ibn Tulun grew up in Iraq, this had a profound impact on transferring Iraqi architectural and planning styles to Egypt during his reign.

Al-Maqrizi states in his book Al-Khitat: «Ahmed Ibn Tulun built this mosque following the layout of the Great Mosque of Samarra, and the same applies to the minaret.»

The Central Fountain and Ablution Area (Miyda'ah): An ablution fountain stands in the middle of the mosque's courtyard, located inside a square-planned structure topped by a dome supported on marble columns.
Stucco Arches, Windows, and Decorations: The arches and windows overlooking the mosque's courtyard feature magnificent stucco decorations carrying geometric and floral shapes.
The Kufic Foundation Tablet: An observer in the eastern arcade of the mosque can spot a portion of a marble slab written in Kufic script, containing the founder's name and the date of the mosque's creation.
The Six Mihrabs: The interior of the mosque contains six mihrabs. The main mihrab of the mosque is characterized as being hollowed out with extremely splendid decorations, directed towards the Holy Kaaba in Makkah, the direction of Muslims during prayers.
The Philosophy of "Al-Ziyadat" (Spatial Isolation): The mosque is surrounded on three of its sides by open outer courtyards called "Al-Ziyadat" (spanning a total area of about 6 acres).
